Nonetheless, fossils of modern birds from these time intervals are virtually unknown.

In his presentation at the international symposium on Chalk & Flint, Daniel will discuss the unique potential of the type Maastrichtian of The Netherlands and Belgium for shedding light on the early evolutionary history of modern birds, and provide recommendations for local collectors to may aid in the future identification of avian fossils in the latest Cretaceous.

Artist reconstruction of birds surviving the K-Pg boundary catastrophe (by Philip Krzeminski).

Dr. Daniel Field djf70@cam.ac.uk University of Cambridge Saturday, 30th of November 2019 (13:45-14:15) at the international symposium on Chalk & Flint Our understanding of avian evolution has progressed tremendously in the last decade, and the end-Cretaceous mass extinction has emerged as a key factor responsible for stimulating the modern bird radiation.
