In presentation at the International Symposium on Chalk & Flint, Nicolas Thibault will give an up-to-date though non-exhaustive history tour of the NW European Chalk through well-documented examples. He will start with the definition of the chalk and provide a beautiful example of an Early Cretaceous chalk in the North Sea which can be considered as a nannofossil L\u00e4gerstatten. After giving an overview of what caused the birth and widespread deposition of the Late Cretaceous chalk, Nicolas will examine different depositional environments from the shores to the deep facies of the Boreal Chalk Sea. Through examples across the Cenomanian\/Turonian boundary, Santonian, late Campanian\u2013Maastrichtian and Cretaceous\/Paleogene boundary intervals, we will see how chalk constitutes an exceptional archive for stratigraphy, past climates and paleoceanography.   <\/p>\n
