Deze kersverse professor is een expert op het gebied van de evolutie van de archosauri\u00ebrs, de groep waartoe de dinosauri\u00ebrs, vogels en krokodillen horen. Daarnaast werkt hij ook aan de uitgestorven dodo. Voordat hij werd aangesteld in Maastricht werkte Leon  meer dan twee decennia in Noord Amerika, onder ander aan gerenommeerde instituten als de universiteit van Harvard, het Royal Tyrrell paleontologisch museum en het College of the Holy Cross.
